Jerry John Herrera died on December 29, 2020 in Gallup. He was born May 5, 1983 in Gallup. He was 36 years of age. Herrera received his GED and high school diploma. He was employed by Albertsons, Coke, and the City of Gallup.

Jerry began martial arts at the age of 5, as time went on, he earned a Fifth-degree black belt in Moo duk Kwan. A black belt in Aikio. A 2nd degree in Shoto Kan, Sharen Ryw. Olympic styles Tai Kwon Do and all weapons.

Jerry received the title of being a five-time International World Champion in Las Vegas, Nevada and seven-time National Champion, New Mexico State Champion. 20 Grand Champion, 900 trophies and won numerous medals. He was also known as the Gallup Karate Kid. He was recognized by the New Mexico Martial Art Hall of Fame. He loved and his passion for the Martial Arts led him to open his own karate school: Adapted Grind. Started teaching at the age of 14. He had 32 years in karate. Jerry made Black Belt Magazine at the age of 12 years old in 1996 and at the age of 17.

Instructor Jerry J. Herrera He took 5 of his students to the Junior Olympic Tai Kwon Do Championship held in Las Vegas, Nevada. 4 medals were won.

He is survived by his wife Raysha Plummer Herrera. His sons; Mario Romero, Xavier Benton, and Azazel Herrera. His parents; Jerry F. Herrera and Louisa Ruiz Herrera. His brother; Felix Lopez. His sisters; Sherry Chavira, and Desiree Herrera Lucero.

He was preceded in death by John S. Herrera, John Bertelle, Priscsilla Sandoval Bertelle, Julian S. Ruiz, John Jr. Herrera, Joe Paul Herrera, and Jackie Lynn Torrez.

On Wednesday January 13, 2021 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church. A viewing will begin at 12:00 PM, a Rosary will be recited at 12:30 PM, a Mass will follow at 1:00 PM with Father Eduardo “Lalo” Espinosa, OFM. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park.

Pallbearers include; Xavier Benton, James Chavira, Jeremy Herrera, Ryan Lucero, Edward Rodriguez, and Mario Romero.

Honorary Pallbearers include; Azazel Herrera, Lexie Herrera, and David Romero.

Cope Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
