Michael Ray Smith, 75, of Aztec, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Friday, August 23rd, 2024, in his home. He was born on August 26th, 1948, in Okeene, Oklahoma, to Lenora (Thurlo) and Alford Smith. He grew up in Enid, Oklahoma, and moved to Farmington in 1959. He graduated from Kirtland Central High School in 1966 before joining the Navy the following year. He became a sailor and firefighter. He was honorably discharged in 1971. He met his wife Jana at the end of June 1974, and the two were married on July 12th, 1974. He worked in the oil fields for 50 years as a driller and a tool pusher for the better part of his career. He ultimately became a consultant. They welcomed their first child, Jason, in May of 1976 and their second, Chong, in September of 1978. His family lived in Aztec for over thirty years. Michael was preceded in death by his father, Alford (Tex); brothers, Steve, Terry Don, and Richard. He is survived by his beloved wife of fifty years, Jana; mother, Lenora; children, Jason (Alison) and Chong “Boogie” (Wil); grandchildren, Dominique, Brook, Emilee, Jayden, and Kayla; great-grandson, Lucas “Bobo”; sisters, Sarah Lynn, Janet, Pam, and Janie; and stepmother, Ruth. His service will be held at 11 o’clock on Thursday, August 29th, at the Farmington Church of Christ, 401 W. 20th St, in Farmington. A short reception will follow at noon.
